What Kind of Water Heater Do I Have?
In the picture to the left you’ll notice two water heaters. On the right is a gas heater. The most telling sign is the exhaust vent pipe coming from the top. There is also a thermostat control on the bottom of the heater with a small dial and black pipe coming from the side of the dial.
On the left is an electric heater. A large electrical wire will be coming from near the top of the heater. This wire could look similar to an extension cord or small grey garden hose.

It is easiest and most cost effective to replace your current water heater with a like fuel type water heater. So if you have electric, replace with an electric, if you have a gas heater replace with a gas heater.

Determine the Profile of Your Water Heater
The table below will help you determine the profile of your heater. Yes, you may have to break out a tape measure, but you don’t have to be exact. The measurements below are for brand new heaters. In 2015, new manufacturing codes required extra insulation in water heaters so now they are slightly larger. If your measurements are close, rest assured you’re selecting the correct profile.
